NATURE IS FREE
by Colt Coleman
Nature is free.
There are so many trees.
Birds fly high in the sky
As clouds fly by.
Galloping on a chestnut horse,
Keeping the cows on course,
The dogs bark
To keep us safe in the dark.
The crisp, clean air
Is for everyone to share.
Hot in the summer breeze,
But cold in the winter, causing a sneeze.
Be thankful for the mountains that are lush and green
And thankful for people even though they can be mean.

Gratitude is as easy as 1, 2, 3.
Won’t you try to share some
and be happy like me!

2 nd PLACE – FIFTH GRADE – YOUTH POETRY CONTEST – 2019

GRATITUDE
by Izzy Haycock
My gratitude is like a light,
very big and very bright.
I love my family so much.
I also love my mother’s touch.
For every single tree,
and every little bee,
There is gratitude,
but let’s NOT include attitude.
I’m thankful for all the doctors,
and all my clothes.
We can all be grateful,
no need to be hateful.
Friends, teachers and family,
there are many sorts.
Technology, jobs and money,
I also love doing sports.
As you can see,
gratitude is the key.
So make up your mind,
And always be kind.

A THOUGHT
by Tabitha Webster
Gratitude is kind and sweet.
Gratitude is such a treat.
I try to have it each day and night.
But all I do is fight, fight, fight.
At last one day I thought and thought.
I found gratitude! but just a spot.
I thought again but then I knew.
I had shown gratitude through and through.
I went to everyone whom I loved a lot.
I knew I had more than just a spot.
I really had a lot.
I went back home to think some more.
I knew I had to give more than before.
Yes, gratitude is kind and sweet.
Showing it is such a treat.
It is filled with love and care.
To everybody, everywhere.

A TREASURE MORE GREAT
by Kolton Cox
A treasure more great
Than the ones in the sea,
The things found in fate
And by what you be.
Oh, lost in time
The things we see.
But in this rhyme
We do not see.
This rhyme was written
For what’s not seen,
But in the gratitude
Of whom we be.
To be a friend,
To be so kind,
To give a gift
You can’t define.
I’m grateful for emotions
To show me the way.
They make me happy,
But some are sad
But they always show.

2 nd PLACE – MIDDLE SCHOOL – YOUTH POETRY CONTEST – 2019

TECHNOLOGY
by Joshua Pickett
What I’m truly thankful for
Is our world where technology keeps score.
We can access the Internet from school or from home
Or even from our very own smartphone.
But we must use it for good;
That must be understood.
To use it for evil would be catastrophic;
It would certainly be most, most tragic.
We can use it to learn
How to use a butter churn.
It can educate us with information galore
And then some more.
The knowledge we gain
Can help us stay sane.
We’re nearing the end;
Now it’s time to hit “send.”

3 rd PLACE – MIDDLE SCHOOL – YOUTH POETRY CONTEST – 2019

MY FAMILY
by Alivia Briel
My family is very important to me;
With their help I can see how great I can be.
They have supported me in my youth.
They have always taught me to tell the truth.
I am grateful for other things, too.
Some of these things are softball and food.
Food is very wonderful indeed,
But softball is a lot more important to me.
My softball team is like my family;
They help me live very happily.
With their help I can stand strong
Even when everything seems to go wrong.
When I do things that let me have fun,
I realize my life is a wonderful one.
Everyone should be grateful for things like this
Even though it is just a short list.

A RAY IN THE DARK
by Seder Nesbit

The wind shrieks against the bristling trees

Pushing, pulling

Putting shame to the previous gentle breeze.
The clouds gather and form,
Mending together like stitchwork,
Giving life to a new rising storm.
Rain begins to thicken.
The air starts to freeze.
My mind can’t help but quicken
My burdening unease.
The hair unfurls from my hood
While mist sprays a delicate frost to my lashes.
The middle of storm in which I stood–
My eyes dimming as each thought of mine crashes.

And I can’t help but wonder
Why must I endure this thunder?
The numbing cold-hearted abuse–
Why must I feel it all let loose?
This burden feels too strong;
The calm spirit inside has begun to crack.
How much longer will this storm prolong?
And just when I think it’ll never fall back.
A ray of light emerges, bold and strong.
Shining brightly through the somber sky above
And layering itself on my skin
Like a warm and embracing shove,
Healing me from deep within.

Page 2
A Ray in the Dark

Only a second, it lasts
But only a second I needed.
For the gratitude in my heart blasts
As the doubt in my mind retreated.
A new power reimburses
A strength of mind that nurses–
Knowledge of the end line
Is something success cannot decline.
For those who are strong enough to
Relish in the single ray of light they get
Are surely strong enough to get through
Amy storm that brings a threat.

GRATITUDE
by Kristal Ford
Gratitude is being thankful for someone’s kindness;
The actions or words are always there to reind us.
Their thoughtfulness can easily brighten your day
That there is always a better way.
Seeing gratitude warms your heart,
For seeing it is the very start.
It’s so easy and simple to do;
Once you begin, it doesn’t seem so new.
Hearing gratitude puts a smile on your face;
A frown can never try to take its place.
Those words are always very pleasant to hear,
Whether they are said far away or very near.
Feeling gratitude comes from dep inside;
The pleasant thankfulness can’t be denied.
The ability to experience when someone helps you,
Makes you want to spread the joy and happiness, too.
Believing in gratitude and all it holds tight;
Being appreciative and thankful is always right.
From seeing or hearing those words that are strong,
The impact they leave can last really long.

THANKFULNESS
by Britta Sperry
Birds singing in the trees and the sun lighting everything I see.
There, the creek is flowing right by the road and the breeze clears the scene.
Snow is melting and grass is growing and leaves are turning green.
Oh, it’s great to see all the color in the world, but my favorite’s green.
I’m thankful for green.
Sun shining and the skies are clear and it’s warm, it’s true.
Butterflies fly from flower to flower with nothing else to do.
The waters warm and clear and the skies and her eyes are blue.
Oh, it’s great to see all the color in the world, but my favorite’s blue.
I’m thankful for blue.
Swim at the pool, frisbee at the park, let’s go play, she said.
Flip flops and sticky popsicles. The warmth goes to their heads.
Roses start to bloom. Campfires coming soon. Those are red.
Oh, it’s great to see all the color in the world, but my favorite’s red.
I’m thankful for red.
Oh, it’s great to see all the color in the world, but my favorite’s green.
But my favorite’s blue, but my favorite’s red.
I’m thankful for green, I’m thankful for blue, I’m thankful for red.
